Vedic religion

Listening to the discussions in class on Hinduism and how to teach it -- it strikes me that it might be really useful to start by getting students to assemble from their own knowledge and from google, a description of Hindu beliefs and practices.

Then, actually assign a translation of the Rig Veda, and then start asking questions about the gods and world that we can actually infer from the verses that have survived.

That is how I would get a conversation going on Hinduism as having evolved over about three and a half millennia...

Doniger is a terrific translator, this is relatively inexpensive.
