Poets of India

I just want to clarify that South Asia has a rich literary canon with poetry, drama, and literature that can easily be adapted into the classroom setting. I welcome a conversation with anyone who is teaching literature to discuss possible connections to other parts of your curriculum.

I have a lot of books- will bring them in to share tomorrow. One caveat: most of my personal library are female writer-centered.

Poets whose literature that can be used in classes:

North India
Soordas
Tulsidas
Kabir
Meerabai
And of course, Tagore, who is a Nobel Laureate (first non-European to gain such a title)

South India
Purandara Dasa

Thyagaraja

Annamacharya

Swati Thirunal

Revolutionary Poets
Sarojini Naidu

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan
(it so happens her daughter lives in Buffalo)

Poet of the Revolution

Indian poets writing in India
Agha Shahid Ali
Indran Amirthanayagam
Reetika Vazirani
Ravi Shankar (no, not that one!)
