More travel narratives

From Walt:

While it is not written by an Indian, the travels of Ibn Fadlan might be fun to teach:
Crichton, Michael. Eaters of the Dead: The Manuscript of Ibn Fadlan Relating His Experiences with the Northmen in A.D. 922. New York: Knopf, 1976. http://catalog.lib.buffalo.edu.gate.lib.buffalo.edu/vufind/Record/000084917

He was sent in the 10th century from Baghdad to what is now Russia.  He is shocked and dismayed by the barbarity of the Northmen.  This was then very loosely adapted into a godawful film called The 13th Warrior starring Antonio Banderas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120657/) as Ibn Fadlan.

There is bound to be something about this in
Fisher, Michael Herbert. Counterflows to Colonialism: Indian Travellers and Settlers in Britain, 1600-1857. Delhi: Permanent Black (Distributed by Orient Longman), 2004. (http://catalog.lib.buffalo.edu.gate.lib.buffalo.edu/vufind/Record/003214248)

Walt: I haven’t read through it or taught it, so I can’t be certain.
