From the handout I emailed....
GOOD SOURCES FOR NEWS ABOUT
CONTEMPORARY CHINA
There is a spectrum of news
sources from within China. To simplify: People’s
Daily English offers the government line; China Daily reflects greater attention to international reception
of the Chinese government’s line – it is only published in English; Global Times in English seems to
somewhere in between the two but some think it is especially nationalistic for
various reasons); Caixin (http://english.caixin.com/) is the boldest
China-based journalism published in English.
South China Morning Post is an
interesting Hong Kong paper in English, with lots of in-depth reporting. Taiwanese newspapers do a lot of highly
politicized reporting on China.
There are lots of interesting
blogs in English on China, covering a wide range of viewpoints. Chinese blogging is also interesting to try
to follow. The Chinese Digital Times project
at the University of California (http://chinadigitaltimes.net/) follows some of
this, focusing on critical views. China
Dialogue is a completely bilingual site that focuses on environmental issues (http://www.chinadialogue.net/)
and welcomes reader participation in discussions. See also Global Voices Online (http://globalvoicesonline.org/),
co-founded by China scholar Rebecca MacKinnon to draw attention to bloggers in
non-English languages around the world.
