More on 20th century literature

Jonathan Spence's Gate of Heavenly Peace provides a good introduction to many of the literary giants of 20th century China, including the famous female writer Ding Ling (I missed a chance to see her speak at the University of Michigan when I was a clueless undergraduate in the early 1980s)...

Xinjie mentioned Qian Zhongshu. Qian's wife Yang Jiang wrote a memoir of her experience in the Cultural Revolution that has been translated into English with the title Six Chapters of My Life "Downunder" (a play on the title of a Qing dynasty memoir).  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yang_Jiang
