When I watched The Last Train Home weeks ago, I was so amazed by the reality that didn't exist when I was in China 20 years ago. The migration has presented both unprecedented opportunities for the peasants liberated by the economic forces and created unfortunate consequences for the young kids left behind.
ReplyDeleteIf you are interested in learning more about the young migrants like the girl in the documentary, you might want to read Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China, by Leslie T. Chang. She followed some girls working the the factories in the southern city of Shenzhen over many years and provided a fuller description of the lives they had. Another one is Oracle Bones by Peter Hessler, who followed some college students who joined the army of the migrants to the south.
